Comments from Other Musicians
I have also begun to add more current comments on the individual product pages. It is very gratifying to get such great feedback from customers.
- Thanks Bob, had come across your site a couple of months ago when researching the double bass, I have been an electric player for many years but have always fancied the upright. I'm very glad to say I bought one and haven't looked back. I'm just about at the stage where I'm now gigging with it and was looking for pick-up opinions on the Talk Bass forums where I came across many very authoritative articles from yourself. I just wanted to say it's great to see someone taking such an interest in sharing their considerable knowledge and expertise with a huge audience and to thank you for answering so many of the questions I had about the instrument. Am looking forward to recieving the pickup and getting on the road with my new baby! keep up the superb work.
Yours extremely gratefully, Dave F**** 4-4-06
- I'm impressed with your level of service and will spread the word about your business among my bass playing colleagues.

Thanks again. Vilda K*** (UK) 6-7-05
- Dear Mr. G.

Just wanted to say thank you for such a speedy service. I received my Double Big Twin and Pure Amp within (3) days of my order. Thank you! I look forward to doing business with you again.

- I just wanted to send a note of thanks for the incredible service. All three items I have ordered from you not only met, but exceeded my expectations and the delivery time was phenomenal. Rest assured that I will be bringing all of my future acoustic bass needs to you first. Thanks for an awesome job!
Respectfully yours, Steve R*** Arvada, CO, 11-16-04
- Nearly everything but my bass itself I bought from you, and have always been
more than satisfied, right down to that little rubber ball thing on the pin.
Your prompt shipping is always good, too.
Sean W**** Raleigh, NC 6-24-04
- I received the bass case I ordered less than 48 hours after I ordered it.
Where's the time to anticipate in that?
I don't write fan letters, it's just not something I do, but in this case I
feel the need to make an exception.
I have been very impressed with the quality of the items I have ordered from
you; everything from the New Yorker amp down to the quiver has been well
made and performed extremely well for me....
I'll have to take a look at your literature and see if I can figure out that
I need something else!

- I just want to thank you for the time you took to answer my questions prior to me purchasing the gig bag, the bass Master Pro and the Bow quiver. The bag is as you described and fits like it was made for my bass. The quiver is wonderful and the Bass Master Pro… Is beyond words. It is the sound I hear my head. It sound like my bass when I play it acoustically or when it is recorded with good mics. I left the realist pickup on just to A B the two systems. There is no comparison. If you’re like me, and I suspect you are, One of the great pleasures of playing acoustic bass is the beautiful, dynamic overtones a good bass produces. I can hear the percussivness of my fingers on the strings and the sustain and vibrato are just wonderful. I could go on and on but you get the picture. Just to let you know, I was a pro in LA for many years and did lots of TV movie and recording dates. I am pretty picky when it comes to bass sounds because I had to be. I played with Jose Feliciano, Larry Carlton, Joe Cocker, Mike Post the TV music composer and Blah blah blah. Anyway, as we say in the islands, Mahalo Plenty (many thanks)

- Just wanted to drop you a note of thanks for the prompt shipment of my new
Ingles Bass Stand, Bass Max and Power Pak.
The instructions provided were extremely helpful and save us both a lot of
time. With a little finagaling I was getting a decent sound in less than a
minute. I can use the info to achieve desired sound quality in future
situations. Thanks for walking us through the process.
Best regards, Ian K****** 2-19-04
- Just received the K&K pick up and pre-amp in good order. Thanks for the
expedient way you do things: you just restored my faith in doing business
over the internet from the US! (I wish you'd sell guitars).

- Wow, thanks for the quick service . I wish I had been surfin the web years ago and found your sight but it took broad band to get me here. Great stuff, great info, GREAT PRICES!!!
Thanks again, Kurt G******** 2-17-04
- Funny story- I tell all the URB players I meet about your site,gollihur.com. Sometimes they will say that they have surfed it but never got anything from you and ask me how good the service is. And I tell them I have bought two preamps, a pickup and a bass case (which was a great value BTW) and that I never had any problem at all -except once (remember the power pack preamp that was one from a batch with dodgy pots?) and that you moved heaven and earth to make it right and did it quickly. (Anyone can give good service when it all goes right- what separates the men from the boys is how someone treats you when it all goes pear shaped. Anyway, the other day a pal of mine , who isn't an upright player told me about a conversation he had with a bassist where he (my pal) had mentioned the bass site with the great service that I was always going on about. The other guy wasn't at all impressed- there was only one decent place on the web to get double bass stuff and that was urbbob.com!
cheers, Matt H. 4-20-03
- Thanks for getting back to me so promptly. I must admit, in all my years as a musician, I don't think I've been as impressed with a company as yours. I received the pickup in the mail two days after I phoned in my order, and the instructions it came with were more than adequate. The prompt tech support also show a good commitment to customer service. Thanks alot for everything.

About the new GOLDEN TRINITY MIC
- Posted by mike o (Mike O'Malley) on June 11, 2001 at 11:38:06: (at acousticbass.com - click to view original)
After mucho research I ordered a K+K "Golden Trinity" Bass az/golden mic pickup system from the invaluable Bob Gollihur. I'm using it with an englehardt plywood bass, strung with helicore pizz light, playing "real book" jazz in trio settings and original alt.rock with some bowing in a second band. I had been using a tiny gooseneck mic with built in preamp which was only adequate
Bob was great--he has a much raspier voice than you would expect from his pictures. I though maybe some guy from the sopranos had come to collect some debts--that, or Bob had a cold. Anyway, the pickup was here the day after I ordered it. Fantastic. I've been able to play it in a rehearsal, a rowdy jam session, and a bar gig since then, enough to have a good sense of it
Installation of the Bass Max required a bit of sanding, but not much, and the instructions were very clear. The mic mount is a bit Rube Goldberg-ish, but I couldn't think if anythng better, and it does work. The two channel preamp is small and seems solidly made. It has eq trim pots inside, which were set just about perfectly when I got it.
Balancing the mic and the bass max produces the best and most natural sound I've heard, ever, from an upright. The bass max alone, on this bass, is a little thumpy, but cutting the mids some took care of that. Blending it with the mic opens up the tone and make sit more 'organic" sounding, while the bass max has lots of "authority" and volume. The combination seemed to respond really well to the bow--to be honest, I think the bass max coverd up some of my deficiencies, in that I seemed to be getting a very slightly more compressed sound--or maybe just more fundamental came through. I mounted the preamp on my bass quiver. In rehearsal and jams the set up was convenient, flexible and effective, I was able to solo with WAY more subtlety and nuance, and it was mcuh much easier to keep a good swing--the whole note came through, and it really breathed. The drummer and guitarist in the trio both remarked on how much better it sounded
The best evidence of the pickup came at the gig. when I stepped on the stage i figured I was screwed--tiny, crowded, no place to put the bass except exactly between my amp (swr redhead) and the monitor, angled right up at the bass. I turned the pickup up very cautiously, expecting massive feedback--nothing. Turned it up more, played a few notes--no feedback. Turned it up as loud as I needed, no feedback. The band started playing, and I loved the tone--big, warm, deep but also clear. There were four bass players in the crowd, and they all complimented me on the tone.
In short this is an excellent setup--flexible, very effective, convenient, natural sounding--I can't wait to use it again. Thanks Bob!

I received the Golden Trinity upgrade package and wanted to thank you for
making this great product available. Shipping was incredibly fast and the unit came well packaged. Attaching the mic to my bridge and the Bass Max was simple thanks to the
concise instruction sheet you included.
The mic was obviously either built by musicians or with musicians' input as the design is well thought-out. I like the attention to the "little" things: the fact that the screwdriver for the internal controls is supplied, and
that an extra piece of dual-lock is included to reposition the mic when
stowing your bass in its gig bag.
I just bought an SWR Workingman's 10 amp and am very happy with the sound I'm getting with the Bass Max/Trinity unit. The K&K allows such a wide "tonal palette" with which to experiment that I would be very surprised if a bassist could not find their ultimate sound regardless of amp setup or venue.
Thanks again, Bob! Warm regards,
Mark Steel 2/5/01
- I got my K&K Trinity a few days ago, and I have to say, it sounds amazingly basslike! I'm pairing/mixing it with a Realist, and the sound is really good. As advertised, the thing is pretty feedback resistant, and the extra EQ on the preamp helps cut back those nasty ringers. My one complaint, which is a small one, is that the "gooseneck" contraption that the mic is attached to is kind of flimsy, and needs some help to stay in place. This is a drag during the period in which you are searching for the right place to put it, but once you find the sweet spot, it doesn't really matter.
On my bass, it did exactly what I needed: beefing up the sound on the top 3 strings (esp. the G), and adding a little clarity to the whole thing. On the whole, it's a helluva bargain for the buck. Kudos to K&K and (All Hail) Bob Gollihur! posted on talkbass.com by Chris Fitzgerald, 12/28/00
Also from Chris, in the same forum a couple days later:
Yet more praise for the K&K Trinity: in addition to sounding extremely clean and acoustic thru my Baby Blue II amp for live situations, it also records incredibly well as a line/mic signal running directly into the board. Last night I used it to record for the first time. It was late, I was tired, and to be honest I tried it because I was too lazy to drag out a mic, mic stand and mic cable and set the whole thing up. Not expecting too much but hoping for the best, I plugged the Trinity signal direct from the preamp out into the board and recorded a take.
When I had finished and was listening to the playback, I got this big smile that settled over my whole face as I realized that, for home recording anyway, I'll never have to set up another mic & stand for the bass again. The Trinity signal sounded every bit as good direct as a mic placed 6-9" away from the bridge, and the response was so even across the entire range of the instrument that I can almost get away without doing any post production mixing on the bass at all (which I had to do w/ my old setup). This also means that the next time I do a live recording, I can give the sound guy that feed, and finally be in control of the sound I'm gonna get(well, they can still screw up the EQ.....). Bob isn't paying me either, but for the money, this may be the coolest piece of gear I've bought in a long, long time. 12/31/00
About the ROCKABILLY SLAP SPECIAL
- Bob - I am a believer! After several more gigs with the K & K Rockabilly pickup I am convinced that it is the best one on the market today for accommodating the Rockabilly slap bass player. I have tried the Underwood, Fishman (BP-100), David Gage, AKG C149, and the Schaller pickup, and the K & K is by far the best for the Rockabilly player. As you know I had a little trouble getting the right sound from the fingerboard side of the pickup, but after further experimentation I found the "sweet spot" for placement and now I am getting a very good "slap sound".
I want to order another pickup for my 5 string right away. I just got this bass back from 90 days of repairs and painting and tried the David Gage pickup on it as a further test... but I was not at all satisfied with the sound I got in comparison to the K & K pickup. The K & K has a much tighter sound, (not muddy), better midrange response and of course the K & K preamp is just excellent for making slight adjustments during songs/between songs. I have mounted mine up where the neck meets the body, facing me, so that I can have the controls right there, for adjustments.
Of course you can use my name and e mail for comments. Another thing I think you should emphasize... is that this pickup can be used at much higher volumes, (before feedback) than most of the competition. This is the most common complaint I hear from Rockabilly bass players - Is that their sound is good at home, but once they get going with the drums, they have to turn up and then the sound turns to mud. I have not had that problem with the K & K. - Thanks again - Lance - the Hillbilly Hellcats 2/11/99
- Bob - I love the Rockabilly pickup! I installed it a couple of weeks ago and I
have been extremely happy with the results.
I tried another company's pickup in the past and it was awful. It was feeding back and sounded like sh_t! The company said that I need a preamp,
but that was no help, just another 100 clams.
Then I came across your web site, and saw the rockabilly pickup. It really did the trick, The pickup is plenty loud, and sounds great! I've played it in several clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area, and it's been fantastic.
P.S. I will post a picture of it on our web site in a couple days.
Thanks again, -Shawn, the guy behind Rockabilly Bass.Com, a great informational source and message board for Rockabilly bass players, and member of the rockabilly band Seventh Day Rototiller, 5/5/99
- I got the the K&K Rockabilly Slap Special Wednesday and used it for the first time Thursday night. It was great! It really sounded like MY bass. The band complimented me all night about my new bass sound.
I had been using a F@#%*#n pickup and there is no comparison, the K&K did the job you promised. I don't think I have had time to find the "sweet spot" on the back of the fingerboard yet, and it still sounds great!
The instructions were very helpful and took me less than an hour to set it up and tweek the pre-amp. Another thing, my feedback problems are almost entirely gone!
You were very professional, and the price was way less than if I had ordered it direct. I will be recomending you and the K&K pickups to my URB buddies !!!

Subject: damn, that's a great system...
Hi Bob,
I just played out with the rockabilly setup and it is absolutely the only pickup (that I've had on *any* instrument) that I've ever actually been happy with!!! I'm not even really slapping, but it picks up little fingerboard nuances which make a huge difference in the sound, it's so much more real.
The wing sound, so rich...mmmmmmmm.

About the BASS MASTER PRO
- I just wanted to let you know how much I like the Bass Master Pro pickup system that I purchased from you a few weeks ago. The flatness and evenness of the response across all four strings is wonderful. It makes my travel bass, an early '50's blond Kay, sound great through an amplifier. The rest of the musicians in the band noticed the difference in my on-stage
sound immediately.
I really like the idea of a pre-amp wherein you may make adjustments to the sound by mixing the characteristics of the two transducers easily and quickly. I slipped the pre-amp's belt-clip onto the lip of my music stand so that any adjustments that I needed to make were right at my fingertips,
which surely beat having to turn around, bend over, and make adjustments to the EQ on my amplifier...
Once again, I think this is a great system, and I plan on buying another one for my other bass in the near future.
Greg Hippen, Bassist for Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" radio show for the past twelve years, and Principal Bassist for the Minnesota Opera Orchestra, 7/4/99
- I recently purchased the K&K Bass Master Pro and wished to let you know how much I've been LOVING this setup! I'm especially happy that I went with the fourth piezo element because (with some careful "futzing") I was able to tame an agressive D string on my instrument.
For me, this setup is especially great because I move my bass over a few different amplifiers (I'm a teacher and I use the school's GK at work and my own Studio Blue at home and gigs), and I can dial in a great sound on each by playing with the balance between the pickups.
For kicks, I even recorded straight out of the preamp into my Roland digital 8-track and got a very microphone-like sound, an effect which was heightened when, bypassing the preamp, I recorded the two pickups onto two seperate tracks and panned the recorded results left and right a bit.
Thanks for helping me enjoy my bass all over again! Sincerely, Eric P. Wallack 1/3/2000
- Well, I got my Bass Master Pro on Wednesday as promised. I installed it Wednesday night, and used it with the band on Thursday. Although it took a few minutes of twiddling to get all the trim controls correct, I am absolutely impressed with it, from the construction of the pickups to the sound and lack of feedback. I do need to tweak positioning a bit, but this blows away my Fishman (BP-100) in definition, clarity, and flexibility. Finally, a moment of peace in this neverending quest...
Now - if only you could tell me where I could sell a Fishman (BP-100) Blender, BP100, and Crown GLM200.....
--> Lawrence Gallick, 12/15/00
- Thanks for the quick turnaround on my order for the Bass Master Pro. I just
received the delivery tonight, and after reading through the directions and
all your documentation, I set about installing the pickups. It took 20
minutes, taking care to set things just right, and then about another 10
minutes tweaking the sound.
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! I wish I had taken the initiative to buy your system
last spring when I got my bass - would have saved a few blisters on my
fingers that I earned trying to increase my volume the "old way." I'm
playing a gig in two nights and can hardly wait.
Your directions and tips are outstanding - enough, clear, straightforward. And again, the sound is just awesome!
A very satisfied customer, Steve McKeag
About the BASS MAX
- I just got a K&K Bass Max and love it. I couldn't believe the sound - I had tried the Fishman (BP-100) and Barcus-Berry, and thought the K&K would only be an improvement, but it was a transformation! The sound out of the amp sounds like my bass. I play as much arco as pizz', and the smooth sound is wonderful. I can even make up in my amp's EQ what my bass lacks in certain tones, so I think it actually sounds better using a pickup.
Thanks for helping make the K&K available. I'll spread the word.
John Nystedt, 4/11/02
ps fyi, I have an Ampeg setup with four 10" speakers and a 5" speaker, which is way more than I need, but it sounds great.
- Dear Bob,
I recently purchased a Bass Max pickup from you. I installed it on a Meisel bass with adjustable bridge. My amp is a Peavey with a 15" speaker, which I normally use for my Fender P-Bass and/or amplified tuba (German band and Dixieland). I used the new set-up on a gig last night for the first time - six piece, trad. jazz.
Wow! What a great sound. I heard comments like, "Nice," "Clean," "Solid," "Warm." Thank you for a great product at a really good price.
Sincerely, Lynn Eberhardt 1/30/02

Just wanted to say thanks for supplying me with such a fantastic pickup, the Bass Max. I ordered it in late August I guess... Anyhow, it was worth it just for the improvement in sound when I play "unplugged". I could believe how much my Fishman (BP-100) had been muting my sound, it was nuts. I had to learn how to tune again, hearing harmonics I had been missing for a few years!
Anyway it sounds great with an amp too, thankfully... I no longer have to roll all the high AND high mid off, I can leave everything virtually flat without invoking feedback. Mike Liston, 12/15/00
- Hey Bob -- Just wanted to tell you about the excellent results I've gotten lately from the BASS MAX I bought from you recently. I've used it on both of my basses--the previously unamplifiable Kay (strung with gut) as well as the 50 year old German plywood no-namer (with steel strings). Used it with the (Dual Channel) preamp on the Kay going into an Ampeg rig at a rockabilly show at the Elbo Room in San Fran. Used it in conjunction with a Crown GLM condenser mic and Fishman Bass Blender (going direct into several P.A. systems) on the Kay at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee last weekend while playing with the Hot Club of San Francisco. Used it with the preamp on the German bass through the Ampeg rig at the Last Day Saloon playing with the Trailer Park Rangers.
It's too late to make a long story short, but suffice to say that in a wide range of applications the BASS MAX has performed superbly. Whether I'm going for balls-out thumping bottom end or authentic wooden slap tone or something more delicately acoustic I've found the tone I need with a minimum of of knob twistery. I've been able to run the Ampeg IV Pro with all the tone controls flat.
Consider me most satisfied...
Sincerely, Joe Kyle, Jr., SF, CA 6/6/00
- Bob: I finally got to use the Bass Max and dual channel pre-amp over
the weekend.......we played in a college theatre. I bought the Bass Max because I still wanted to blend it with a mic. Was I surprised during the sound check.
The Bass Max was way better than the mic. Big, round sound. The ol' Kay "thump" never sounded so good. So I ended up using the Bass Max on its own. Sounded great...the sound guy was very happy...said it was no trouble to set up on the board. The rest of the band (even the drummer) said how great the bass sounded. At intermission several members of the audience came up to me and said how nice it was to hear an upright bass sound so good.
All I know is I could hear it very well all night and it
sounded just the way I like. I did not feel the sound was much different from the unamplified sound. Absolutely no feedback problems..simple to set up. It did not feel like was playing an electric bass either.
I had a few misgivings before I used it because of bad
experiences with other bridge pickups that I had or tried. Buying it without hearing it was a gamble that paid off. I now feel very confident about using it in any situation....it reproduces the bass very well. I'll be using it again for another show in a large hall next week.
It's nice to be able to say that your recommendation was
accurate....the K and K stuff certainly delivers as promised. Amplifying the Kay is no longer a headache. I will be more than happy to recommend it to others. - Martin Chapman, 5/7/00
- A week ago I received the Bass Max pickup and Power Pack preamp I ordered from you. I just want you to know that I'm extremely happy with this unit. Until now I have not found a single one that I that I was completely satisfied with. I think the pickup is simple, very well built, but most of all it sounds fantastic. I have, (for quite some time now) been looking for some kind of pickup system that could recreate or at least come close to the natural, unamplified of my bass (a 50s german Wilfer strung with Spirocores). Also, I think the preamp is very flexible soundwise not to mention the size of it. Keep up the good work, you just got a fan in Sweden.
Thankfully, Mats Grönberg 11-1-99
- Bob, I meant to get back to you however, since I installed the Bass Max on my Kay Swingmaster Bass, It was tough to get off from playing and taking the time to email you.
EXCELLENT turnaround to get this shipped to me so quickly!! From the time I opened up the package, it only took me about 15 minutes to install the pickup. This install time includes filing down the bridge to fit the tranducer snug and also putting the battery in the preamp. I was up and playing when done installing. What a sound!!
Speaking of the preamp, what a difference versus just plugging directly into my bass amp with out the preamp. I can get what ever sound I choose with the K & K preamp.. Perfect!!
Bob, I don't mean to sound to excited but you were absolutly correct. Both the Bass Max pickup and the K and K Power Pak preamp work well together with my Kay.. I would highly recommend this to others.
Many Many thanks Bob. - Jamie Gomez 10/29/99
- ...I did mount it to the Juzek and FINALLY a pickup that works on this bass! Still wondering why the Gage wasn't happening (mondo feedback and some dead notes), but the Bass Max does it's thing and brings out the character of the Juzek well. ...The pickup was well behaved with feedback (I leaned the body of the bass up against the amp and got none but it wasn't dimed) but it's on the gig that I'll get the real scoop about that. I should have bought one of these first instead of screwing around with the others I tried in the interim.
Thanks, now I can actually use this bass on gigs...I bought it last November and was despairing I'd need to sell it if I couldn't amplify it. - Brian Rost, 6/24/99
- "I've got to say that at this point, I'm really tickled to death with the product. The pickup itself installs without any gluing, drilling, etc, you just stick it in the Bass side of the wing of your bridge, clamp your input jack on the A&E strings, and you're ready. I like that, because it comes off and on so easily. The little pre-amp(the Power Pack), I was really impressed with. It's the epitome of simplicity, which is tailor made for me, with bass, treble, and Gain control knobs. And of course it clips right on your belt which is neat, but the thing that surprised me the most, was the range of tone response I got out of the little bugger. I'm running it through my little Dean Markley KB 200, and I'm going to try it through a PA also, to see how it sounds that way, but so far I'm extremely pleased. Thanks Bob!" - Mark Vestich (on the 2xbass list) 11/20/98
- I just had to let you know how happy I am with my new Bass Max! I am a novice 1st year bassist, although I have played acoustic guitar for over 30 years. I have only listened to a few acoustic bass pickups, but I definitely notice a warmth with the Bass Max that I have not heard before. I was especially happy with the balanced sound across the strings. It was thrilling to touch the low E string ever so lightly, and project such a wonderful sound. We played some Christmas music today which sounded real nice. I also got the chance to jam with some bluegrass types. They were extremely impressed with the sound of my bass. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with those of us who are less inclined to dive into the technical aspects of things like this. - George Ireton 12/6/98
- "I finally got to really check out what my new pickup sounds like. It's great! Even the sax player noticed I sounded like my bass. I played mostly pizz. The sound just filled up the room. On the preamp I put the volume all the way up, just as I do my electric bass, but left the treble and bass completely off. I turned off the graphic eq on my rig, using just a little parametric; it's a lively room. The sound was SO natural....
Thank you. You've been most helpful." - peace, David Kaczorowski, 3/31/98
- The Bottom Line, April 18 1998 #139; Re: URB pickups.
I'd suggest you contact fellow TBL'er Bob Gollihur at Gollihur.com. He's helping to sell several K & K transducer pickups which sound much better than Fishman (BP-100), IMO. I use the Bass Max, which is very similar in design to an Underwood, and gives a big, strong signal---which I like. The Double Big Twin (DBT) gives a less robust but very "hi-fi" signal with a lot of detail in the top end. With 4 separate transducers the DBT offers tremendous flexibility in customizing your tone. Either product offers the best-sounding E-string in any of the transducers I've tried, including the classic Underwood... - Tom Buckley, 4/18/98
- "I tried the pickup on my acoustic "doghouse" and was VERY pleased about the sound...I did install it on the E side and the response as smooth and even... thanks for a great suggestion...I may want to try the 4piece one too...although this one is SOOO>>>good!
I play mostly country and bluegrass stuff and the MAX works really well on the doghouse...I also have a little 1/2 size that I carry sometimes and the MAX on it is really something...makes it sound just like a grown-up!!! thanks again..." - "I wanted to let you know that I am very happy with my recent order. I replaced
my Fishman (BP-100) piezo with the K&K, and there's really no comparison. The K&K is
much more natural sounding and it was cheaper, too. The installation was
simple and your instructions were clear"
"I was just about to fork over half a grand for a better pickup than my Fishman (BP-100)
when I came across your web site, so thanks! You saved me money and I am quite
satisfied. I don't have the best bass in the world by a long shot, but it sure
sounds better with the DBT." - John Burns 5/15/98

"Go to Gollihur.com he sells the K+K line of pickups. The Double Big Twin is $ 97.00, and is the best upright bass pickup bar none. Lots of output, clean detailed sound, reasonable price, and easy installation via doubleback
adhesive. Mounts right on the bridge and sounds great."
- "The sound... I love it! I left my venerable BB (Barcus Berry) on in order to A/B the two. No contest. The K&K is extremely clear w/a very complete and flat response across the desired frequencies, and a nice little oomph in the low-mids---makes for a great-sounding A string. I especially like the lack of emphasis in the "finger-noise" region. I find the K&K a bit less microphonic than my BB or my Shadow... I can turn up the preamp gain w/out a lot of increased finger noise, and the clarity jumps right out. It's nice not to have to worry about distortion (not even close) the way I did when I used the Gage (Realist) pickup. Judging from my headphone test, I'd call it more "natural-sounding" than the Gage...(Realist)" - Tom Buckley
- "I received the pickup on Friday and, of course, immediately had to install and check it out. No problem with the install, took about 15 minutes. Have spent many hours since then playing through my amp, making adjustments to the amp and SansAmp DI settings. I think I'm getting closer to the sound I want. My impression so far is that I'm getting a warmer, more natural tone from the K&K than from my Fishman (BP-100) pickup.... I believe than the K&K pickup is an improvement over the Fishman (BP-100), it certainly sounds less electric, and I'm happy with it. The big test occurs Saturday when I play it at a job."
later... "The job last night worked out very well. I have been playing the bass through my amplifier a lot this past week, tweaking this and that to hone in on my preferred sound. I was able to achieve a sound that I liked. I've also found that, at higher volumes, the K&K pickup is less prone to feedback than the Fishman (BP-100) was. The overall volume at the job last night was moderately loud and I experienced no feedback. My Fishman (BP-100) used to feed back easily on an open A, unless I adjusted the amp settings and then the sound quality suffered. This problem did not exist with the K&K. The bottom line (bottom line! I'm killing myself) is that I like the K&K and find it superior to the Fishman (BP-100) in tone and feedback busting capability." - Larry Dolamore, 11/23/97
About K&K Sound PREAMPS
- I just wanted to drop you a quick note of thanks for getting me that pre-amp (Model 97) so fast. I just around to trying it yesterday, and it makes all the
difference in the world. I had no idea my bass could sound like that! Very
cool growl-like sound that I always though was impossible to get on my bass. - Joseph Carlson, 2/24/99
